After defeating Judd Trump 10–7 in the World Grand Prix, Ronnie O’Sullivan will have a day to celebrate. On Tuesday, he will compete in the Yushan World Open qualifying round. The world champion Luca Brecel and the defending champion Trump will play their opening matches at the chosen location, but O’Sullivan will have to arrange a match against Alfie Burden in Barnsley in order to secure his travel to the event.
This week, Ronnie O’Sullivan will be performing in the less glamorous setting of a Barnsley recreation centre instead of the packed house at Leicester’s Morningside Arena.
World No. 1 O’Sullivan won the World Grand Prix on Sunday, capping an incredible run of form in which he overcame Judd Trump 10-7 in the final in Leicester, having fallen behind 4-0 at one point.
It happened a week after he won the Shanghai Masters and UK Championship, taking home £876,500 in prize money, to win the Masters for the eighth time, defeating Ali Carter 10-7 at Alexandra Palace. It was a remarkable campaign.
O’Sullivan’s goal this week is to earn a spot at the World Open in Yushan, China (March 18–24), which is located in the Jiangxi Province.
On Tuesday night, he will take on world No. 98 Alfie Burden in his first match of the competition at Barnsley’s Metrodome.
World champion Luca Brecel and reigning champion Judd Trump’s matches have been postponed until the tournament’s main arena, but O’Sullivan needs to travel to Yorkshire this week to watch them.
