Reports state that while Michigan and Jim Harbaugh are still in talks over a contract extension, there is still a significant area of contention.

Furthermore, there is no direct connection between it and money matters.

Yahoo! Sports reported on Tuesday morning that Harbaugh is requesting that any sanctions be specified in his new, lucrative contract, essentially protecting him from termination in the wake of the ongoing NCAA investigations into his programme.

“He is also seeking to have any decision involving ‘for-cause’ termination — whether for NCAA violations or anything else — determined by a three-member arbitration panel rather than the school’s athletic director, a role currently held by Warde Manuel,” writes report author n WetzelDa.

According to Wetzel, Harbaugh is considering a long-term contract extension that would make him the highest-paid college football coach when the announcement is made. He just engaged well-known agent Don Yee to assist in navigating NFL interest, and on Monday he had an interview with the Los Angeles Chargers regarding their head coaching position.

Despite having just finished an unbeaten 15-0 season and winning a national championship in the College Football Playoff, Michigan is still subject to NCAA oversight. Multiple Level II breaches related to inappropriate use of coaches and illegal recruiting have been brought against the programme, and Harbaugh himself is facing a Level I violation for allegedly lying to investigators.

Meanwhile, the Big Ten intervened and suspended Harbaugh for three games in mid-November, alleging the Michigan football team had broken the league’s sportsmanship code. The NCAA is still in the early stages of looking into an alleged in-person scouting ring that broke the regulations.
