There isn’t much more to say about Austin Ekeler because I have discussed him a lot this season. With extra contract incentives to produce and a request for a trade during the offseason, this was the year he had to show himself more than ever. Due to an injury and missing several games, he hasn’t been the same player as previous years. His lack of output could be caused by ageing or normal wear and tear.
Just one year younger than Ekeler, Christian McCaffrey has improved while still having ailments after moving to San Francisco. Therefore, there may be hope for Ekeler’s recovery. It’s uncertain, though, if he’ll still be sporting Los Angeles Chargers powder in 2024. It’s likely that the Chargers won’t have much room to pay him. Thus, it should be intriguing to watch where he ends up throughout the offseason.
This one hurt, man. He has suffered numerous injuries over the past few years, but you can’t hold people responsible for injuries. Joey Bosa was feeling great during the offseason, but the season slipped away from him when he injured his foot and then his toe.Man, this one hurt. He has had multiple injuries in the last few years, but injuries are not someone’s fault. Joey Bosa had a wonderful preseason, but after injuring his foot and then his toe, the season got away from him.
This year, Isaiah Spiller didn’t advance as much as he ought to have. As a third back, he wasn’t used very often, and when he did play, the majority of my notes on him described his yardage production as “slight,” “short,” or “small.” This was anticipated to be the season he broke out because he missed so much last year due to injury. Rather, his drama still leaves a great deal of questions unsolved. It’s unclear what part, if any, he will play in this offence under the new coaching due to his lack of growth.
For Morgan Fox, this year was not his year. His total stats were lower in a few categories (quarterback rushes, pressures, STOPs, and the majority of Pro Football Focus grades) even though he had five sacks. Even though he missed just one game total in 2023, he played 178 fewer snaps than in 2022. I disagree now with my previous position at this time last year that he ought to receive a contract extension. If the Chargers traded him, they would save additional money ($3.5 million) but would still owe a tiny amount of dead money ($1,250,000). I think I’ll be more inclined to trim than to keep in 2024.
One of the biggest letdowns of the season has been Quentin Johnston. He’s the one that made me wonder, “Why didn’t they pick Zay Flowers?” every time I saw him mishandle a throw or miss a catchable ball. In the first round, Flowers finished 22nd and Johnston finished 21st.
Although Johnston is fast, his ball security has always been an issue. The Chargers’ best-known pass-interception misplay in Week 11 against the Packers at the 35-yard line cost them a chance to tie the game. Everyone was focusing on Johnston because of his physicality and athleticism after Mike Williams was sidelined for the season, but he’s too raw. He didn’t produce like a first-round pick, but perhaps he can turn things around
