After a three-year exile, Matthew Stafford, one of the Detroit Lions’ greatest players of the 2010s, will make his way back to Ford Field on Sunday. But other fans are still asking for the quarterback’s head because they are upset over his trade to the Los Angeles Rams.
Stafford and the Lions have a rich and sentimental past together. One of the team’s numerous rebuilding initiatives resulted with the quarterback joining the squad as the first pick in the 2009 Draft.
The signal-caller tried his hardest to make his followers happy for 12 years, but he was never able to accomplish the intended outcome. In 2020, Stafford and the Lions board finally came to a decision to make the player’s exit easier.
The Lions and Rams decided to trade quarterbacks, which resulted in a move that affected all parties immediately. In 2021, Stafford guided Los Angeles to the Super Bowl, and Jared Goff came to Detroit to bring the team back.
Stafford will lead the Rams back to Ford Field this Sunday to face the Goff-led Lions in the wild card game. When long-standing grievances surfaced, social media turned into a battlefield.
The 2020 departure of quarterback Stafford was mutually agreed upon, however the Instagram fan page “The Detroit Line” called for a ban on Lions jerseys including the quarterback’s name and number, saying, “On Sunday, we are calling for a ban on Lions-Stafford jerseys.” Detroit shouldn’t and won’t be honouring him. He is now an adversary of ours.”
The post continues, “He didn’t believe in this franchise, his teammates, or the city. He asked to be traded.” He want the simple route with a pre-made victor.”
The user wishes that, in addition to being asked not to wear Stafford Lions shirts, “you get ridiculed and have it confiscated” if someone does. This is not the moment for humour or cuteness. This has to do with business and driving the last nail into the coffin of SOL.”
Not every fan was in agreement. Many of the profile’s followers said how much they admired their former QB. They recalled in their answers that despite not having the best team, Stafford provided them a tremendous deal of satisfaction.
