The winger for Manchester United, Antony, has finally spoken out about his contentious celebration following the team’s FA Cup semifinal victory against Coventry City last weekend.
After defeating Coventry on penalties, United advanced to their second consecutive FA Cup final, where they will once again play Manchester City.
With 20 minutes remaining for regular play, the Red Devils held a comfortable 3-0 lead. However, they capitulated in a spectacular way, allowing Mark Robins’ team to tie the score and send the match into overtime.
Victor Torp scored in the 121st minute to give Coventry the lead, but fortunately for United, the goal was disallowed for offside in the build-up. Despite Casemiro’s miss of the first goal, the 20-time English champions went on to win the penalty shootout.
The way the triumph was handled had much to be desired, as evidenced by how fast the supporters fled Wembley following the final whistle.
It was embarrassing to say the least of Antony’s antics, highlighting the team’s mental frailty. Rasmus Hojlund turned to the Coventry players and cupped his ears, clearly taunting them, as soon as he buried the game-winning penalty. When Harry Maguire shook hands with the Championship stars to congratulate them on their valiant efforts, his response could not have been more dissimilar.
Ten Hag was questioned over the Antony situation during his news conference prior to United’s Premier League matchup against Sheffield United on Wednesday. The Dutch coach clarified that the 24-year-old’s actions were a result of being provoked by the Coventry players.
