I watched my cousin punch a hole in the wall last night as Patrick Mahomes led the Kansas City Chiefs to another Super Bowl victory. He wasn’t the only one who was disappointed; the Niners Faithful will probably never get over this loss.
The 49ers have made appearances in seven NFC Championship games and have made three trips to the Super Bowl in the previous 14 seasons. However, it hasn’t been sufficient regardless of the coaching staff (Jim Harbaugh or Mike Shannahan), the quarterback (Colin Kaepernick or Brock Purdy), the defensive line (Patrick Willis or Fred Warner), or the health (or lack thereof) of Christian McCaffrey or Deebo Samuel.
As sadness, rage and and anxiety spread across Niner Nation today, here’s how some of the team’s fans and well-known supporters — from rappers to sportswriters to the team’s “official post-game ranter” — are coping.
Beloved Niners advocate and sports radio host Bonta Hill was reflective and even vulnerable — rare for a publicly vociferous football addict — in his post-game reaction:Do any of you recall when Purdy’s subpar performance was compared to Jimmy Garoppolo’s career stats? Yes, regarding that. However, let’s wait to summon Sam Darnold too quickly. Though it appears that the majority generally concur, some people are still curious about the other quarterback. For that minority, this is intended.
Apply the brakes. That is not yet appropriate. Since Purdy hasn’t played to the point where making such a snap decision is required, it really shouldn’t be taken into account, but we all know how crazy some fans can be. It’s absurd to even be having this conversation, even if you’re not impressed.
