Nazem Kadri has taken on a new role as the center of attention for two rookies, but he is enjoying it.
The Calgary Flames defeated the Boston Bruins 3-2 on Thursday night thanks to a goal and an assist from Kadri at 3:56 into overtime. Moments after Jakob Markstrom had denied a David Pastrnak shot on the other end, Kadri maintained possession of the puck on a 3-on-1 and blasted a low shot into the far corner on Linus Ullmark.
By the end of that one, Kadri remarked, “I was exhausted, just an absolute track meet.” It’s good to have emerged victorious from that one. For us, Marky made some excellent saves. gave us the chance to start making money.
Since being paired with 22-year-old Connor Zary and 24-year-old Martin Pospisil, who also scored, in mid-November, the 33-year-old’s line has been Calgary’s best line.
“Throughout my entire career, I have never played with as many rookies,” Kadri remarked. Finding individuals with whom you can develop chemistry is a pleasant experience. These men have integrity; they’re always eager to improve and push themselves. And that inspires me as well.
With 50 points (20 goals, 30 assists), Kadri leads the Flames and is only six points behind his output from his rookie season in Calgary.
Flames coach Ryan Huska described him as “one of those guys that hates to lose more than he likes to win.” “Therefore, I believe you see him elevate his play.”
Markstrom, who made multiple key stops in the latter two quarters and overtime, shared the limelight. With his 211th career victory, Markstrom surpasses Tommy Salo to take second position on the list of goaltenders of Swedish descent with the most victories (459). Henrik Lundqvist is first on the list.
With a.928 save percentage, Markstrom has gone 13-7-0 since his comeback from a fractured finger on December 18.
