The Detroit Lions lost a key part of their offense to Pro Bowl tight end Sam LaPorta in the regular season finale.

LaPort reportedly suffered a hyperextended knee and bone bruise during the 30-20 win over the Minnesota Vikings.

Although the initial diagnosis isn’t as serious as many feared, it’s likely the rookie will miss Sunday’s playoff opener in Detroit against Los Angeles.

With LaPorta playing a big role in Detroit’s offense, the Lions will have a missing piece in their passing game.

Additionally, the depth at the position is thin with rookie sidelined and backup Brock Wright’s status uncertain since he missed the last three games with a hip injury.

As a result, the Lions would be wise to evaluate outside options that could help their offense in the event of an emergency.

Among the available players is three-time Pro Bowl selection Zach Ertz, who was waived by Arizona in late November.

The Lions use their tight ends in a variety of ways, both through the air and as blockers in the run game.

With James Mitchell as the only current healthy option, Ertz would be a natural fit given his veteran status.

The Lions have shown all season that they are good at bringing in veterans. General manager Brad Holmes had brought in a duo this season in outside linebacker Bruce Irvin and defensive tackle Sam LaPorta.
