One Coventry City supporter made the unusual decision to commemorate their team’s FA Cup semi-final loss to Manchester United.
Last Saturday (April 21), the Championship team faced the winners of the previous season at Wembley. After trailing 3-0 against Erik ten Hag’s team, they rallied for three goals in 25 minutes, including a penalty equalizer in the 95th minute from Haji Wright, and lost 4-2 on penalties.
Victor Torp’s goal in the 120th minute, which gave Sky Blues fans a 4-3 lead, came from Wright’s cross, and they thought they had pulled off an incredible comeback.
Following a brief period of widespread jubilation, VAR examined the goal and determined that Wright was offside. After the goal was ruled out, the match proceeded to penalties, where Rasmus Hojlund’s spot kick helped United win.
Coventry’s passionate performance made their supporters proud even after the heartbreaking defeat, and they were given a memory-worthy moment when they thought they had secured a spot in the FA Cup final for the first time since 1987.
It was surprising that one Coventry fan ordered t-shirts featuring their 4-3 score against United in order to remember that fleeting moment. Following the social media release of images of the t-shirts, comments on the X (previously Twitter) post varied widely.
“They’re going to milk this for centuries,” wrote one fan, and “this is without a doubt the saddest thing I’ve ever seen,” wrote another. One Coventry supporter responded with a different perspective, saying, “We know we lost. Why is it that we are unable to laugh at ourselves? Even though United prevailed, I still can’t let Cov fans have their moment in the spotlight.”
