Cam Akers of the Vikings will miss the remainder of the 2023 NFL season due to a torn Achilles tendon.

After sustaining a torn Achilles during the team’s 31-28 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, running back Cam Akers was ruled out for the season by coach Kevin O’Connell, dealing yet another serious blow to the Minnesota Vikings offence.

Following the game, O’Connell informed reporters that it was thought to be an Achilles injury. An MRI verified the information.

Akers, 24, had to be helped off the pitch after sustaining the injury in the third quarter at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. He was declared out of the game right away. When he was taken off, he had eight carries for 25 yards.

For the remainder of the afternoon, Minnesota had to rely more on Ty Chandler and Alexander Mattison.

This would be Akers’ second achilles injury in his career. He had previously injured the tendon prior to the 2021 season, missing most of it but playing again just five months later and leading the Los Angeles Rams to the Super Bowl championship.

This season, the Vikings have already experienced a disproportionate number of achilles injuries. The similar ailment struck star quarterback Kirk Cousins during the team’s Week 8 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

The offence for Minnesota was already functioning without top wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who is on injured reserve, and lost K.J. Osborn on Sunday when he went through the concussion protocol.

Josh Dobbs, a recently acquired signal caller, is much more spectacular because of this because he was able to lead the team to victory and score 31 points.

Akers, a 2020 second-round selection of the Rams, was traded to Minnesota on September 21 and was anticipated to create a strong tandem with Mattison. This season, he had 52 carries for 142 yards and two scores.
