Fernando Alonso has committed to the Formula 1 team Aston Martin for the minimum of the ensuing two seasons.
Aston Martin said Fernando Alonso, 42, who had no contract left at the end of this season, has signed a new agreement that will go through at least the end of 2026.
This indicates that Alonso intends to continue driving in Formula One until he turns 45, if not later.
“I felt I love driving too much to stop at the moment,” he continued, adding that retirement “never went to my mind.”
After Alonso decided he was ready to accept the sacrifices of his life necessary to remain in Formula One, staying with Aston Martin was a “natural decision”.
The two-time world champion “is hungry for success, driving better than ever, is fitter than ever,” according to team principal Mike Krack.
“He is completely dedicated to making Aston Martin a competitive force,” Krack stated.
It’s wonderful news that Fernando’s long-term future with Aston Martin is secured. Over the past 18 months, our working relationship has grown significantly, and we both have a great desire to see this project through to completion.
“For the past few months, we have been in constant communication, and Fernando has kept his word by talking to us before deciding he wanted to keep racing. Fernando has demonstrated his belief in us, and we reciprocate.”
Alonso is no longer eligible for possible berths at Mercedes and Red Bull for the upcoming season as a result of the decision.
