The race in the Itzulia Basque Country on Thursday resulted in a ruptured lung for reigning Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard.

During a stage four descent, the 27-year-old Dane was involved in a high-speed incident that fractured his collarbone and multiple ribs.

According to hospital testing, his team, Visma-Lease a Bike, also discovered lung tissue hemorrhage or bruising on Friday.

“He is stable and had a good night,” they declared. He is still in the hospital.”

Following their falls in the incident, race leader Primoz Roglic and fellow Grand Tour winner Remco Evenepoel also withdrew from the competition.

The stage was neutralized for the final 35 kilometers.

Leading domestique for Vingegaard and nine-time Tour stage winner Wout van Aert suffered a broken collarbone and multiple rib fractures in a crash during the Dwars door Vlaanderen one-day event on March 27.

The Tour de France begins this year on June 29.

French rider Romain Gregoire, 21, of Groupama-FDJ, won the penultimate fifth stage on Friday in a sprint finish from Orluis Aular.

Mattias Skjelmose of Lidl-Trek, who gained the lead overall on Thursday after a number of well-known riders lost their positions, saw his slim lead cut to two seconds by Max Schachmann, who finished third.

The top ten riders are now separated by 30 seconds going into the difficult 137.8-kilometer finish on Saturday, which begins and concludes in Eibar.
