The spring Classics wave is gathering strength, and on Sunday, Gent-Wevelgem is expected to contribute to the Belgian swell. Rivals are vying for the best takeoff positions as the race from Ypres to Wevelgem is known for its chaotic and thrilling cobblestones, steep climbs, and occasionally strong winds.

A few important riders who are anticipated to be vying for the victory on Sunday have already come to light thanks to the races leading up to the 253-kilometer men’s event and the 171.2-kilometer women’s event. Of course, it’s hard to overlook the world champions Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx). However, given the caliber of their team, which also includes Jasper Philipsen and Lorena Wiebes, you can’t even guarantee that the riders wearing rainbow jerseys will be their strongest lineup on race day.

Naturally, there will be a plethora of competitors vying for the victory as well as to gain momentum leading up to the Tour of Flanders, the following Monument on the schedule. Naturally, attention will be focused on Visma-Lease a Bike for the men’s race in Gent. Even though Wout van Aert isn’t on the squad this year, the group will undoubtedly want to try and retain the title that Christophe Laporte—or another Visma rider—won. Elisa Balsamo and Lidl-Trek are dominating the women’s event, as the Italian has won both Brugge-De Panne and Trofeo Alfredo Binda. In Wevelgem, could it possibly become three in a row?
