Keston Hiura, the top prospect from the Milwaukee Brewers, will not be joining the Detroit Tigers’ squad after having a fantastic spring. What comes next is still to be seen.
Keston Hiura, a previous top prospect, has been sent back to minor league camp by the Detroit Tigers. They announced the news on social media.
For Hiura, who was expecting to get on the roster as a reserve infielder, this is a disheartening situation. It is still to be seen if he will decide to continue in the minor league system of the Tigers or if he will have another opportunity to make an impression.
This spring, he played in the Grapefruit League and hit.323, totaling nine RBI and two home runs.
It was a disappointing way for Hiura’s time with the Brewers to end when he was let go at the start of the summer. At one time in 2019, MLB.com listed him as the 20th best baseball prospect overall.
Before being declared off the 40-man roster for 2023, he participated in every Brewers game from 2019 to 2022.
Unfortunately, during his time in the major leagues, he deteriorated almost every year. In 2019, he made his debut, participating in 84 games and hitting 19 home runs. In 59 games during the COVID 2020 season, he hit 13 home runs. Then, in 2021, his offense collapsed: in 61 games, he hit four home runs and only managed a.168 batting average. Despite playing in 80 games and hitting 14 home runs in 2022, his batting average was only.226.
For Hiura, the strikeout has always been a significant issue. During the COVID year, he led baseball in strikeouts, striking out 85 times in just 60 games.
Having participated in 88 minor league games last year, he had an extremely successful year in the minors. Having 23 home runs and 79 RBI, he batted.311. Even though he still had a.397 on-base percentage and struck out 91 times in 88 games, perhaps he has turned the corner for his next opportunity.
