Browns quarterback Joe Flacco’s deal includes a $75,000 bonus for each game in which he plays 50% of the snaps and the team wins.
With Flacco off tomorrow, the team converted that incentive into a $75,000 bonus to join the 53-man roster to ensure he received the money. Nice gesture from Cleveland.
When the Cleveland Browns signed QB Joe Flacco to the practice squad, few could have imagined how far they would go together.
A few days before Thanksgiving, Flacco was added to help new starters Dorian Thompson-Robinson and PJ Walker.
Fast forward, the Browns and Flacco agreed to an active roster contract in mid-December and were locked into a playoff berth by the end of December.
Part of Flacco’s contract included an attractive $75,000 decision for the team. In every game started by the QB and won by the team, Flacco earned that amount. Eager to protect veterans, the Browns deployed veterans in Week 18.
This means that Flacco cannot win this $75,000 bonus. As a quality organization, Cleveland’s front office made sure the starting quarterback got his money:
Overall, the $75,000 isn’t a big deal for either the team or Flacco (who made over $150 million in the NFL).
What will be on the minds of players (both Browns and impending free agents) will be making sure a veteran is respected and taken care of, both financially and while he’s on rest.
