It’s almost Opening Day, and surprisingly, there are still several elite free agents available.

At this rate, Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery could not be ready for Opening Day as they have yet to sign new contracts. The best players still available in free agency, but there’s still no sign that a deal is close.

Snell has been connected to the New York Yankees on numerous occasions, and that connection will persist until he contracts with another team. He was seeking a big-time, long-term contract, and the Yankees made him an offer, which he turned down.

At the time, Snell was seeking a bigger contract, so New York switched to Marcus Stroman. However, it appears that the two-time Cy Young Award winner has lowered his asking fee.

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman claims that the leftist is now amenable to a brief agreement with opt-outs.

“Star free agent Jordan Montgomery still seeks a long deal while reigning (National League) Cy Young winner Blake Snell is fine doing a short-term deal with opt-outs,” Heyman stated.

There has been much discussion about how improbable it is for the Yankees to make a big trade due of the significant tax penalty they would incur. Even yet, a deal is still implausible but not impossible.

them looks like New York is all in for the 2024 season, and adding Snell would give them a serious shot at winning the World Series.

Snell could be a big assist if the Yankees could sign him for a single season, even though it would be costly. Then, the two teams could get back together the following offseason. The team’s top priority will be to sign Juan Soto to a long-term contract; if they are unable to do so, they may decide to utilize that money for Snell.

Signing Snell to a long-term contract now might affect the amount of money required to give Soto in the upcoming offseason, but a one-year contract might make a lot of sense.
