The arrival of spring means that most college football teams will begin their first practices in preparation for the 2024 campaign. Coaches will have a clearer idea of how their teams are stacked in the weeks to come before the new season.
Staffs will also assess any unmet needs now that the first transfer phase and both high school signing periods have ended, as the spring transfer window approaches in April. At this time, most rosters are mostly set, so if a team is still looking for a whole makeover, they’re most likely in trouble. However, there are a few well-known teams that have particular needs.
For new coaches appointed in January, like Kalen DeBoer of Alabama and Jedd Fisch of Washington, the spring transfer window is particularly crucial. The winter window was about to close, or had already closed, when they took their new jobs. Unless they brought players they knew from past destinations, that left limited time for evaluation and recruiting.
Some teams haven’t been able to fill the void left by transfer defections, or they haven’t been able to reach their top goals. Whatever the situation, as spring training gets underway around the nation, these are a few well-known clubs with obvious roster needs.
