The division-rival San Francisco 49ers have appointed Sorensen as their next defensive coordinator, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. With the 49ers, Sorensen, 45, has advanced swiftly from his position as defensive assistant in 2022 to defensive pass game specialist in the most recent season and defensive coordinator currently.
In the past three years, Sorensen has served as the 49ers’ third defensive coordinator. He takes over for Steve Wilks, who was let go by the 49ers following their Super Bowl 58 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs. DeMeco Ryans, the current head coach of the Houston Texans, was before Wilks.
In 2013, Sorensen started the next phase of his NFL career as the assistant special teams coach for the Seahawks, capping a ten-year career spent mostly as a backup and special teams player. During his eight years in Seattle, he won several titles, but his most notable role was defensive backs coach from 2017 to 2020.
In 2021, Sorensen also worked for a year as Urban Meyer’s special teams coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
