The high school football player from Alabama, Caleb White, passed away after apparently collapsing at the gym during a practice.
Multiple reports state that on Thursday, a local hospital declared the 17-year-old dead.
As a three-star prospect, White finished each game with an average of 20.9 points, 3.1 assists, and 3.8 rebounds.
Although the cause of death is currently unknown, an autopsy is scheduled for this Friday, according to AL.com.
White was reportedly taken to St. Vincent’s East hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, after collapsing during a team workout at Pinson Valley High School on Thursday.
After hearing the news, his grandfather George Varnadoe Jr. wrote a heartfelt remembrance on Facebook.
“Caleb was a fantastic basketball player who was ranked No. 2 in the state of Alabama and 25th in the nation for point guards in his class. He was also an honor student, highly intelligent, courteous, and a great role model.” Caleb, rest in peace. Man, I adore you.
Following the tragedy, Michael Turner, the school’s principal, shared a statement with parents.
Turner wrote, “Unfortunately, I have some very sad news to report tonight.” “Today at school, one of our senior students experienced a medical emergency.” First responders were called and life-saving measures initiated right away.
