The date is October 9, 2021. As the sun sets over Memorial Stadium, Nebraska gets ready to take on No. 3 Michigan. I’m getting comfortable in my student section seat and am looking forward to my first Lincoln night game.

“Which team am I going to root for?” is a burning question that crosses my mind amidst the commotion of the crowd.

I have been a devoted supporter of the Michigan Wolverines for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I was always a Maize and Blue fan. But I’m wearing scarlet now. I’ve turned on my past self.

I’ve never been in a more electrifying atmosphere than I did that night. My eardrums almost burst when Levi Falck took an Adrian Martinez screen pass to the house to put Nebraska ahead 21–17.

The third-quarter

As I get ready to witness the Huskers take on the Wolverines in my final game as a student this week, I can’t help but think back on these two teams and how they helped to develop my passion for sports. One is my youth team. The other was the first sports team I covered for a living.

On Saturday, I’ll be watching from the press box as two of college football’s all-time greats square off.

I was raised on Michigan football since I was a small child. Since her 1957 Ann Arbor graduation, my grandmother has been an ardent Wolverine supporter. Although we didn’t get to spend much time together as children, I have some of my best memories of watching Michigan football games with her.
