Giro Mäder, a Swiss rider who won the Tour de Suisse in 2023, passed away after suffering a serious accident in stage 5.
The 26-year-old Swiss rider Giro Mäder of Team Bahrain-Victorious tragically lost his life earlier today in a serious accident that happened at a high speed during a descent in the last stretch of yesterday’s stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse 2023.
At kilometer 197 of stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse 2023, on Thursday, June 16, Mäder and rider Magnus Sheffield of Ineos-Grenadiers were involved in a serious crash. As the vehicle descended from the Albula Pass, the accident happened at a very high speed.
The race director claims that the race doctor arrived on the scene in less than two minutes after the incident. Sheffield sustained a concussion but remained responsive. But Mäder remained still in the water and was revived before being flown by air ambulance to the Chur hospital.
After Mäder passed away, the team released the following statement:
With profound sorrow and heavy hearts, we must announce Gino Mäder’s passing. After a catastrophic crash during stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse on Friday, June 16th, Gino lost the fight to heal from his severe injuries. This tragic accident has devastated our entire team, and during this extremely trying time, our thoughts and prayers are with Gino’s family and loved ones.
The 26-year-old was airlifted to the hospital after receiving resuscitation at the scene from medical personnel who also performed CPR, following the high-speed incident that happened on Thursday’s stage’s last descent.
At 11:30 am, we bid farewell to one of our team’s bright spots, Gino, as he was unable to overcome his greatest obstacle, despite the exceptional efforts of the Chur Hospital staff.
Gino was a valued member of our team and the cycling community at large. He was an incredible athlete and a shining example of perseverance. His skill, commitment, and love for the game have motivated all of us.
