Three former top prospects, Jackson Chourio (ranked No. 2 in all of baseball by MLB Pipeline), Garrett Mitchell, and Frelick make up Milwaukee’s outfield depth chart heading into 2024. Then there is Christian Yelich, a former MVP and All-Star who has five seasons in a row with negative defensive WAR and runs saved.
Many assumed that Yelich would begin his transition to a full-time designated hitter role as a result, leaving the three young players to man the outfield.
But Frelick’s tryout at third base might indicate that Yelich is sticking with the field. Alternatively, Pat Murphy, the manager, might be merely experimenting with lineup positions to maintain all four outfielders.
At third base, Andruw Monasterio is the official starter as Josh Donaldson and Brian Anderson both became free agents in the previous autumn. Joey Ortiz, an infielder acquired in the Corbin Burnes deal from the Baltimore Orioles, may also see some time on the field in the hot corner.
