In late January, UNC basketball reached out to Great Crossing (Ky.
) junior Malachi Moreno.
And as Rivals’ David Sisk reported, the Tar Heels followed that up by sending his assistant Sean May to check out the heralded 7-foot-1, 220-pound center’s performance on Tuesday night.
It’s safe to say that Moreno, a four-star prospect with quickness and instincts that belies his size while ranked 35th overall in the 247Sports 2025 Composite, has impressed May.
After all, he had 26 points on 13-of-15 shooting, adding 11 rebounds in 27 minutes in Great Crossing’s 72-49 home win over Walton-Verona.
Malachi Moreno holds about two dozen offers, highlighted by one from a hopeful blue-blood recruit from his home state of Kentucky.
In the meantime, he has visited several suitors, including the Wildcats, and he has said in recent interviews that a decision could be made as early as June.
So if UNC head basketball coach Hubert Davis and his staff hope to make it, they’ll probably need to add Moreno to their 2025 wish list soon.
To date, the Tar Heels have officially targeted nine current high school players.
They’re both five-star talents ranked in the top 15.
But it’s worth noting that UNC’s pitching board, while loaded with forwards, still doesn’t show a center.
That may not be the case for long, considering the Moreno show May attended this week.
