In February, the UNC basketball offense hasn’t been boring at all. The No. 10 Tar Heels (20-6, 11-3 ACC), who have lost their last three games but are still atop the conference standings, have averaged 83.8 points over their last five games, never going below 75 points and twice surpassing 90.

They just finished scoring 96 points in a 15-point victory at home against Virginia Tech (15-11, 7-8 ACC), which is ranked lower.

However, third-year Tar Heel head coach Hubert Davis told the ACC media on Monday that he intends to step up his experimenting with new actions in practice as UNC approaches the home stretch of the regular season and has a full week to prepare for Virginia’s renowned pack-line defense.
Naturally, as Davis pointed out, the goal is to prevent his team’s veteran-heavy Tar Heels from becoming overly cliched in the latter stages of the campaign, especially its two best players, senior guard RJ Davis (21.3 points per game) and graduate center Armando Bacot (14.3 points per game):

“I’m always looking to add things to what we’re doing consistently on both ends of the floor for the duration of the season and especially for the rest of the year.” I don’t want any opponent to have a constant understanding of our game plan, including what we’re going to do on both ends of the court.

“So, I believe it’s good news for us anytime we can add, adjust, or change things.

“And also, just finding ways for Armando and RJ, just with how defenses have been playing them, finding ways to get them the ball a little bit differently, a little bit better — depending on the defense — to allow them to be really effective on the offensive end because we just need them, from an offensive standpoint, playing extremely well.”
