As we approach the NFL combine at the end of the month, there will be a lot of talk about the Cleveland Browns offseason. With eight draft picks, some flexible cap space, and a plethora of free agents at their disposal, the Browns can strengthen their playoff roster.
Different areas of need are revealed by examining the roster broken down by positions and the players who are contracted and free agents. Whether those are resolved through the NFL draft or NFL free agency is the key question facing general manager Andrew Berry.
According to one expert, the biggest question the Browns need to address this offseason is wide receiver. The wide receiver position has been an issue, despite the team’s recent strong drafting efforts.
Cleveland may once more use their top pick in the second round of 2024 to acquire a receiver in order to prepare for the future and to complement Amari Cooper. Berry would need to overcome Browns’ past in order to truly hit on a pass catcher given the list above.
To be fair, most selections made after the first round of the NFL draft are more likely to be misses than hits.
Because of the high bust rate at the position and Cleveland’s past, Berry might decide to use free agency to assist the receiver group instead.
Cedric Tillman from last year is one of the three third-round receivers that Berry is in charge of. The most productive Berry receiver pick is Donovan Peoples-Jones, who was traded for a late-round pick last year. Travis Benjamin’s career has been the most remarkable of the group.
Tillman gave some cause for optimism in 2023, but he will need to get past the constraints of his college record.
