Following his successful stint as an interim head coach, the Las Vegas Raiders are reportedly finalising an agreement to name Antonio Pierce as the NFL team’s head coach. This news was reported by a number of media outlets on Friday.
After a 3-5 start to the season, Josh McDaniels was fired, and Pierce assumed leadership of the Raiders on October 31. Pierce had previously served as linebackers coach.
Over his tenure, the former linebacker for the New York Giants went 5-4, with victories of 63-21 over the Los Angeles Chargers and 20-14 over the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City.
The Raiders had thrashed the Giants 30–6 in his debut game.
The Raiders were “working to finalise” a deal with Pierce, according to sources cited by ESPN, while CBS Sports stated they were “zeroing in on officially announcing the hire”.
According to the NFL Network, Pierce and the team had reached an agreement on terms. Pierce had been connected to openings at the Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons.
Players on the Raiders have shown a preference for Pierce, and All-Pro pass rusher Maxx Crosby recently declared he would think about leaving the team if Pierce was not selected.
In his playing career, Pierce was a member of the Giants that won the 2007 Super Bowl.
