It is with heavy heart that we report this Friday morning that Tom Schoen, a former All-American safety for Notre Dame, passed away on Monday. His age was 77 years.

At Notre Dame, Schoen was a star from 1965 to 1967. He played quarterback for the first two seasons of his collegiate career before moving to defensive backfield for the final two seasons with the Irish. That paid off as he went on to lead Notre Dame to the national championship in 1966 and was named an All-American as a senior in 1967.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by Cleveland’s Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School, where Schoen was a quarterback for thirty years prior to taking over as head coach.

Schoen led the Vikings to a 9-0-1 record as a senior while playing quarterback in high school. After that, he continued playing football at the University of Notre Dame, where in his final season, he was chosen as an All-American. The Cleveland Browns selected Schoen in the draft, but he decided to forgo a professional career to serve two years in the American Army. In 1970, he spent one season as a player for the Browns.

Schoen’s friends and family are in our thoughts and prayers.
