Julian Champagnie and Tre Jones were to his right. Devin Vassell went to the wing, and Jeremy Sochan controlled the ball on his left. After moving into the frontcourt, Sochan dribbled in Vassell’s direction before cutting back towards the middle of the court, where he found the 7-foot-4 rookie sensation of the San Antonio Spurs at the top of the key to pass the ball to.
Wembanyama shot the ball to Vassell right away, setting up the two-man game that the Spurs have been using so successfully lately. Wembanyama and Vassell had all the room they required on the left side of the court as Sochan gradually moved backward.
Vassell and Wembanyama both knew what would happen next.
Wembanyama made a move that appeared to set up a screen for Vassell, but instead he slipped the screen in between Miles Bridges and Nick Richards, two Charlotte Hornets defenders. Vassell lifted a lob above their extended arms and delivered it to Wembanyama, who promptly hammered it home.
Wembanyama was trailed by Vassell and Sochan as he jogged back up the court. Recognising their respective roles in the play, he gestured at them.
“It’s something we didn’t do two months ago, a month and a half ago, moving the ball and making quick plays like this,” Wembanyama remarked at the time. Devin has been developing rapidly and getting better at throwing lobs like this as well. “So those kinds of efforts when we share the ball like this, it’s really unstoppable.”
