The primary striker of the Georgian national team and Metz, Georges Mikautadze, will continue his career in a top Ligue 1 club, but not with Monaco as previously expected.
According to L’Equipe, despite Mikautadze having previously agreed on terms with Monaco, he is now on the verge of joining Lyon. He was scheduled to arrive in Monaco for a medical examination tomorrow, but at the last moment, he informed the club that he would be joining Lyon instead.
Metz did not oppose the player’s wish and accepted Lyon’s offer.
Mikautadze was one of the six top scorers at Euro 2024, scoring three goals in four matches for the surprising Georgian national team.
In the summer of 2023, Mikautadze transferred from Metz to Ajax for 16 million euros, but he failed to make an impact at the Amsterdam club. He subsequently returned to Metz on loan, and Metz re-signed him at the end of the loan period.
In 20 matches in the previous Ligue 1 season, Mikautadze scored 13 goals, although this was not enough to prevent Metz from relegation.
Interestingly, Mikautadze was part of Lyon’s academy from 2008 to 2015 but did not manage to break into the senior team of his hometown club.
