Cape Town, July 20: England secured their fourth Under-20 World Rugby Championship with a 21-13 victory over France, showcasing a dominant performance anchored by their formidable scrum.

In a match marked by set-piece superiority, England’s forwards Joe Bailey and Arthur Green crossed the try line to secure the win. The victory marks England’s first U20 world title since 2016, signaling a promising future for their rugby program.

England’s scrum power was evident from the outset, winning penalties with ease. Despite missing first-choice tighthead Billy Sela, props Asher Opoku-Fordjour and Afolabi Fasogbon excelled, highlighting their potential for senior team selection. Key players like Junior Kpoku and Henry Pollock also delivered standout performances, offering hope as England prepares for the 2027 World Cup.

The match began with a strong showing from England’s forwards, but early errors and a resilient French counter-attack kept the game tight. France initially led with a penalty from fly-half Hugo Reus and nearly scored a try, only to be denied by a knock-on.

England eventually took control, with Bailey’s close-range try breaking the deadlock. Despite another penalty from Reus before halftime, England maintained their edge.

The second half saw England capitalize on their scrum dominance, with Green’s try near the French line further cementing their lead. Although France’s Mathis Ferté scored a late try, it was not enough to overturn the deficit.

England’s coach Mark Mapletoft praised the team’s performance and the forward pack’s power. “The group is super special,” said captain Finn Carnduff. “To win two trophies together is incredible.”

As England celebrates this victory, the focus will shift to integrating these emerging talents into senior rugby, with hopes for continued success on the global stage.
