Sunday Offering: Oklahoma’s Hiring Process Is Still Getting Stronger
Since Christmas, the Sooners have been in the running for a few exceptional high school prospects as they use the transfer portal to improve their roster for the upcoming season.
After Oklahoma’s 2023 campaign ended, Brent Venables and team had to replace two coordinators, but they didn’t slow down in their recruiting efforts.
OU has been busy assembling its future roster, with players still available through the transfer link, high school prospects narrowing down their lists of preferred colleges, and the Sooners’ 2024 class arriving over the weekend.
Oklahoma has heard positive news in the last several weeks about high school recruiting, but has only received one commitment through the portal.
The Sooners’ coaching staff understood they would need a suitable backup option for highly rated signal caller Jackson Arnold, especially with former backup quarterback Davis Beville in the transfer portal.
Oklahoma discovered the ideal candidate on Thursday night to fill the previously mentioned position: Longhorn quarterback Casey, a former standout at OKPreps
Thompson was a four-star recruit out of high school who played for Southmoore and Newcastle. He was ranked as the 14th best dual-threat quarterback in the nation. Among other schools, Thompson chose Texas over Oregon, Oklahoma, and Ohio State.
He passed for 2,113 yards and 24 touchdowns as a junior in college, with just nine interceptions, while playing for the Longhorns. When Thompson faced his father’s former team, OU, he had one of his best games as a Sooner legacy player, throwing for 388 yards and five touchdowns.
