Sam LaPorta, the tight end for the Detroit Lions, is still questionable, but head coach Dan Campbell keeps providing encouraging reports on the rookie weapon.
He’s getting better, Campbell added. “He was present during the walkthrough.” We won’t know anything or think we have a clear picture until Friday afternoon, at the latest. But we’re going to do more with him every day. He’s getting better.
Against the Minnesota Vikings in the team’s regular season finale, LaPorta sustained a bone bruise and an overextended knee. Although early reports appeared to indicate that LaPorta would miss at least one or two games, Campbell has made it clear that LaPorta might play all week in Sunday night’s NFC Wild Card game against the Los Angeles Rams. He mentioned that they received more positive news than they had anticipated after the Vikings game, and on Monday he gave LaPorta a “outside shot” at playing this week.
LaPorta has been a vital component of the offence for the Lions this year. He is tied for the team lead in receiving touchdowns ten, and he ranks second in terms of receptions (86) and receiving yards (889). His effect as a receiving weapon has been evident. But that is only a small part of his function. He plays a crucial role in their pass protection and run blocking strategies as well. The only players who have played more offensive snaps than the rookie tight end are Jared Goff, a couple of offensive lineman, and Amon-Ra St. Brown.
Though it’s unclear how well LaPorta needs to feel, Campbell made a very obvious point in his brief statement.
Campbell stated, “There’s no need having him if we don’t feel like he can help us.”
Wednesday afternoon is the first practice of the week for the Lions. Soon, we’ll find out if LaPorta will appear in it.
