The group reforms. The Dallas Cowboys signed offensive lineman La’el Collins to their practice squad on Thursday to bolster their strength in the trenches ahead of the playoffs.
Collins, a former Cowboy, spent the first six years of his career in Dallas before joining the Cincinnati Bengals.
He’s back in silver and blue — with the idea that it could be a “Super Bowl change” — and few people are happier than Cowboys right guard Zack Martin.
The future Hall of Famer spoke about his reunion with Collins on 105.3 The Fan Friday. “Yeah, it was great to see,” Martin said.
“I went there, got a text Monday morning saying he was in the building training…
I just had to talk to him, and obviously he’s back in the building today. Collins has been a vital member of Dallas’ elite offensive line since the late 2010s.
He, along with Travis Frederick and current stalwarts Martin and Tyron Smith, were crucial to Dak Prescott’s survival as a young quarterback.
His connection to Prescott is well known, with Collins listed as Prescott’s bodyguard.
He is unlikely to play now, but Prescott and Collins have publicly expressed enthusiasm for the signing.
Yet it’s only a few steps away from seeing the land. Collins still has the task of developing, and head coach Mike McCarthy said of selecting the newcomer:
“I don’t think it would be fair to him.”However, that didn’t stop his teammates from celebrating his arrival.“I can tell you this: It’s great to have him in the room, man,” Martin said.
“He has this infectious personality; makes you smile every time you see it.
If he finds himself on the field in the upcoming playoffs, it will likely be at left guard — if Tyler Smith’s injury worsens — or Terence Steele at right tackle amid his struggles.
