Victor Honorio intends to use his understanding of the desert to win the title of IBJJF.
On November 19, when fighters with entirely different fighting styles take to the mats in Long Beach, California, the heaviest of the six weight divisions featured in The Crown, the brand-new IBJJF invitation event presented by FloGrappling, stands to take the competition to the next level.
As the GFTeam black belt Victor Honório prepares to defend his title in the ultra-heavyweight division against three formidable hittiers—Erich Munis, Roosevelt Sousa, and João Gabriel Rocha—he will be vying for the 15k cash prize that will go to the winner.
Regarding Honório, his assurance in his powerful guard passes and chokes, along with a trustworthy understanding
His five years of experience working with Qatar’s security forces is a major contributing factor to his confidence. Honório was brought in to teach Jiu-Jitsu to the local army, but he soon realized that his new students needed more than just competitive Jiu-Jitsu; they needed self-defense training. Drawing from the strong base he received from his instructors and his black belt father, Honório developed into a proficient self-defense expert, and he currently employs this expertise to elevate his performance.
Now that he was back in Brazil, Honório was ready to take the competitive scene by storm, having learned everything from the people of the desert. He defeated seven opponents with a terrifying scarf choke to win the Rio Fall Open in 2023. He also had an incredible run at the Brasileiros, making it to the weight and absolute finals before losing twice to Victor Hugo. Honorio reflects on his time in Qatar and how teaching his students the fundamentals changed his fighting style, even though his game hasn’t changed much.
