Sportingly, the Formula 1 season has not started badly for Checo Perez. He is still far behind his teammate, Max Verstappen, but he has managed two second places in the first races, which is the minimum the team asks of him.
Still, the Mexican is not as dominant against the Ferrari, who are the second team and cannot lose too many points, because with the car he has he is required to be runner-up.At the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix, he received a five-second penalty for an ‘unsafe release’,
when he ignored the red light at his pit stop and wentout, forcing Fernando Alonso to brake hard. He managed to pull away from Charles Leclerc and what happened did not alter the outcome of the race, but the FIA has added a further penalty point to his superlicence.
He currently has eight points and with 12, he would miss one F1 Grand Prix.Checo can’t afford two more penalties, as depending on the severity, he could miss a race. These superlicence points cover the last twelve months and Perez has to be careful, as the first penalty points do not expire until September 17
At the Singapore Grand Prix in 2023, the Mexican driver collided with Alexander Albon and was deducted a point.
Japan is the Grand Prix where Checo came off worst, as the FIA gave him two penalties, one for colliding with Kevin Magnussen and the other for overtaking the Safety Car, and he lost four points.
In the last race of 2023, he collided with Lando Norris and lost two points and in Jeddah he has seen the last penalty for the unsafe release.
