Everton legend Dixie Dean and his wife Ethel Fossard have once again attracted attention following renewed interest in the private life of one of English football’s greatest-ever goalscorers.

William Ralph “Dixie” Dean married Ethel Fossard at St James’ Church in Birkenhead on 19 July 1931. Contemporary reports described the wedding as a closely guarded secret, with hundreds of supporters eventually gathering outside the church after news of the ceremony became known.

The couple went on to build a family and had four children. Historical accounts describe their marriage and family life during Dean’s extraordinary football career with Everton and England.

However, claims circulating online suggesting that Dean filed for divorce or that Ethel publicly admitted to an affair are not supported by the reliable historical sources reviewed for this article. No verified social-media statement from Ethel can be established, and such allegations should not be presented as confirmed facts.

Dean’s football legacy remains unquestionable. He is remembered as one of Everton’s greatest-ever players and famously scored 60 league goals during the 1927–28 season, a record that has become one of the most celebrated achievements in English football history.
