The Black Cats confirmed that Montgomery will take over the role, replacing the club’s previous goalkeeping coach as part of a major restructuring of the first-team coaching staff ahead of the new season.
Widely regarded as one of Sunderland’s greatest-ever players, Montgomery made more than 600 appearances for the club and remains best known for his heroic performance in the 1973 FA Cup Final, where his incredible saves helped Sunderland defeat the mighty Leeds United in one of English football’s greatest upsets.
Speaking after his appointment, Montgomery expressed his delight at returning to the club he has always called home.
“Sunderland has always been in my heart. It’s an honour to return and help develop the next generation of goalkeepers. I can’t wait to get started and contribute to the club’s future success.”
Supporters quickly flooded social media with messages of celebration, welcoming the club legend back to the Stadium of Light. Many fans described the appointment as “the perfect homecoming” and praised the club for bringing back someone who truly understands Sunderland’s identity and traditions.
Club officials also welcomed Montgomery’s return, highlighting his wealth of experience, leadership, and deep connection with Sunderland as valuable assets for the coaching team.
