Today, that fairytale is shattered forever.
In a long, deeply personal and painful post shared this morning, Judith Hurst confirmed she has filed divorce papers, ending their marriage, and laid bare the nightmare she has been living through in recent months — all triggered by an accusation she says is completely false, hurtful, and has destroyed everything they built.
“It is with a broken heart, and after months of pain, silence and turmoil, that I confirm I have filed for divorce from Geoffrey,” Judith began, her words clear, firm and full of hurt. “After 62 years together — a whole lifetime, through everything imaginable — I never thought I would have to write these words, or walk away. But I have no choice. I have been accused of something terrible, something untrue, something that insults every part of who I am and every year of loyalty I gave to him. Geoff has publicly and privately accused me of sleeping with Nuno Espírito Santo, the head coach of West Ham United. He has told friends, family and officials that I have been having an affair. He has made this terrible, baseless claim, and he has refused to listen to me, or believe me, or accept the truth. And because of this, everything is over.”
She explained that the trouble began earlier this year, when Sir Geoff became suspicious and jealous after she attended several official club functions alongside him, where she spoke and spent time with manager Nuno Espírito Santo and his family. She says their conversations were nothing more than polite, respectful and friendly — normal social interaction at events she has attended for over 60 years. But she says her husband’s mind became filled with doubt, and he became convinced something was going on. When he confronted her and she denied it completely, he refused to believe her, and instead launched what she calls a cruel and unnecessary investigation — dragging club officials, lawyers and friends into the mess, demanding proof, and treating her like a criminal.
“He turned our life upside down,” she wrote. “He hired people to look into me. He asked questions of club staff. He made Nuno and his wife part of this nightmare, dragging innocent people into his own paranoia. Nuno and his wife are wonderful, kind people. They are friends. They have been nothing but respectful to me, and this accusation has hurt them deeply too. There is absolutely no truth to it. There has never been anything between me and Nuno. Not a word, not a look, not a moment. I have been faithful to Geoffrey every single day of our marriage. I loved him. I devoted my life to him. And this is how I am repaid — called a liar, accused of betrayal, and treated with total disrespect.”
In the most explosive part of her statement, Judith went public with the real reason she says he made the accusation — and revealed a side of the football hero the public has never seen before. She says that in recent years, Sir Geoff has changed completely: he has become bitter, controlling, angry, and consumed by jealousy and insecurity. She says he has been abusive, critical, and hard to live with, and that the false affair claim was just the final straw.
“For a long time now, people have only seen the legend, the hero, the knight,” she said. “But I have lived with the real man. And the truth is: my husband is a bitter, angry, controlling person who has treated me terribly for years. He has always needed to be the centre of attention. He has always been jealous of anyone else getting praise. He has been cruel, unkind, and dismissive of everything I did for him. When Nuno arrived at the club and became successful and popular, Geoffrey became jealous. He felt overlooked. He felt people liked Nuno more than him. And because of that, he made up this lie — to hurt me, to hurt Nuno, and to make himself the victim. He is not the man everyone thinks he is. He is selfish, insecure, and cruel. And I cannot live with him one more day.”
She went on to say that the investigation he demanded proved 100% that nothing happened, that there was no evidence at all, and that even his own hired people told him she was innocent. But she says he refused to accept it, and continued to accuse her — leaving her with no option but to leave.
“They told him I was innocent. They told him it was all in his head. But he didn’t care. He wanted to believe the worst. He wanted to hurt me. So I am done. I have given him my youth, my love, my loyalty, my whole life. I supported him through every high and every low. I buried our beautiful daughter and held him up when he couldn’t stand. And in return, he destroyed my name, my reputation and our marriage over a lie. I am walking away with my head held high. I have done nothing wrong. I am free now.”
The news has sent shockwaves through West Ham United, the football world, and across the country. Sir Geoff Hurst, now 84, is one of the most revered and loved figures in British sport — a national treasure, a hero, and a gentleman to millions. To see him accused of such behaviour, and to see his marriage end in such a bitter and public way, has left fans heartbroken and stunned.
Nuno Espírito Santo and his wife have also been dragged into the storm. The club manager released a short statement this afternoon, confirming they have been targeted by the claims, and completely clearing both himself and Judith of any wrongdoing.
