LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Before we get to the Run for the Roses on Saturday, there’s a slew of events building up the Derby Week experience.

With the start of Derby Week comes one of the original and longest-standing traditions of the Kentucky Derby Festival.

The Great Steamboat Race has been taking place on the Ohio River since 1963. Vessels compete for bragging rights.

Last year, the Belle of Louisville was declared the winner. You can find out if she holds her title on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Transitioning from the old to the new, 502sday returns for its second year. The focus is on recognizing the enduring contributions of Louisville businesses that have been at the heart of our community for over a century and a half.

Wednesday’s event is where history meets the track. Champions Day shines a spotlight on the Kentucky Derby’s rich history and the world of thoroughbred racing.

“[The Derby]’s the oldest continuous sporting event in the United States,” Darren Rogers with Churchill Downs said.

Each event captures what makes Derby special while Thursday honors what makes the Bluegrass state unique. Thurby celebrates the heart of Kentucky’s culture, which is bourbon, Bluegrass, and thoroughbred racing.
