On Tuesday, Jannik Sinner refuted the notion that he is currently the greatest player in the world.

Sinner stated that Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, two of his top three competitors, should not be compared to him.

If the Italian world number two wins in Madrid during next two weeks, he may overtake the world number one Djokovic in the rankings. He comes into the Spanish city full of confidence and with an amazing 25-2 win-loss record for the season.

The defending champion of the Australian Open, who possesses three championships in 2024 that lead the tour, is 1,650 points ahead of Daniil Medvedev in second place in the ATP’s Race to Turin.

It seems like a difficult question to respond to. We only ever see this instant, and occasionally I believe that this is both good and bad.

“I still think that, considering everything that Novak has accomplished, you cannot compare myself to him. The same holds true with Carlos. Carlos also triumphed more than me.

“I hold great regard for both of them. The 22-year-old Sinner told reporters in Madrid, “I just try to play my game, trying to understand what works best for me and then we see what I can achieve.”

Sinner is hoping to improve on his two prior Caja Magica visits, where he was never able to get past the third round.

Due to Djokovic’s withdrawal from the competition, Sinner is the number one seed in Madrid and will play either Richard Gasquet or Lorenzo Sonego in the second round.

It will be interesting to watch how he does this year, he continued. “I used to struggle quite a bit in the previous years, finding my level here.”

Alcaraz returns from a wound

Alcaraz, meanwhile, was unreserved in his assessment of Sinner as the finest player in the game, and the Spanish world number three concedes that stopping his close friend will be difficult.
