TAMPA, Florida: The quarterback situation for Alabama is not good.

That could be oversimplifying things, but that is the current circumstance that new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees has put Alabama head coach Nick Saban and his team in.

Thanks in part to Ty Simpson, the No. 10 Crimson Tide defeated USF 17-3 on Saturday night at Raymond James Stadium. However, with the regular season 25% complete, Alabama still has a definitive quarterback starting choice.

The Crimson Tide passing offense was unable to generate much momentum throughout the day, despite South Florida having the 128th-ranked passing defense in NCAA football going into the game. Alabama finished with 107 passing yards and no passing touchdowns, scoring their only touchdown in the second half. Since Jalen Hurts passed for 96 yards against Florida State in 2017, this was the lowest passing total for Alabama.

Despite having a rough game, Buchner got his first Crimson Tide start against the Bulls. He was removed prior to halftime after going 5 for 14 for 34 yards. He stayed away from the game.

Jermaine Burton, the wide receiver, was in the end zone and behind the USF defense on his last drive, but Buchner’s pass was barely in his grasp.

After replacing Buchner, Simpson went 5-for-9 for 73 yards and the game-winning rushing touchdown to put the Crimson Tide ahead.
