In his 106 England caps, Charlton scored 49 goals, setting records for the nation at the time.

He won three league titles, an FA Cup, and a European Cup with United over the course of his 17-year first team career.

According to his relatives, Charlton “passed peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning”.

Tributes poured in, calling him “England’s greatest player” and “an undisputed legend”.

It was revealed in November 2020 that Charlton had received a dementia diagnosis.

In a statement, his family said they wished to “pass on their thanks to everyone who has contributed to his care and for the many people who have loved and supported him” as he passed away surrounded by them.

“We would request that the family’s privacy be respected at this time,”

According to United, Charlton was “one of the greatest and most beloved players in our club’s history.”

“Sir Bobby was a hero to millions, not just in Manchester, or the United Kingdom, but wherever football is played around the world,” the team stated.

“Sir Bobby will always be remembered as a giant of the game; he was admired for his sportsmanship and integrity as much as for his exceptional abilities as a football player.

“The Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation’s life-changing work will perpetuate his legacy, and Manchester United’s and English football’s history will be forever marked by his unmatched record of accomplishment, character.

For their Premier League match against Sheffield United on Saturday night, Erik ten Hag’s current United team wore black armbands, and both home and away fans applauded in remembrance before kickoff.

With Charlton’s passing, the only remaining member of the victorious team is Sir Geoff Hurst, the striker who scored a hat-trick in England’s 4-2 victory over West Germany in the 1966 final.

Hurst wrote: “Very sad news today on X, formerly Twitter. Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the real Greats, has departed. Neither we nor the entire football community will ever forget him. Beyond just sports, the entire nation will miss a wonderful colleague and friend. My sympathies go out to his friends and family.”
