Daylen Austin, a defensive back for the Oregon Ducks, was taken into custody following a tragic hit-and-run, according to the police.

The Eugene (Ore.) Police Department said on Monday that Daylen Austin, a defensive back for the Oregon Ducks football team, had been taken into custody in relation to a tragic hit-and-run incident.

“This is a complex investigation and EPD is still gathering information to be submitted to the Lane County District Attorney”s Office for a final charging decision,” a statement from the police stated.

According to police, a 46-year-old man was struck about two miles from the University of Oregon campus on Monday night at 9:10 p.m. and died as a result. There were no more details provided.

An Oregon spokeswoman said in a statement, “We are aware of the incident and are awaiting additional information.”

In Oregon, a car hit-and-run is classified as a Class C felony, with a maximum five-year jail sentence.

As of Wednesday, according to online records, Austin remained incarcerated in Lane County Jail.

As a true freshman, Austin saw action in three games for Oregon last season and totaled thirty defensive snaps.

According to a consensus of major recruiting agencies, he was a four-star recruit who was rated as the No. 10 cornerback and the No. 109 overall talent in the 2023 football class.
