Josh Dobbs was a great addition to the San Francisco 49ers as a backup to Brock Purdy.
It’s not often that a team can insert Dobbs, a player of reasonable ability, as a backup. Even though he might not start all 18 games for a team, he shown last season that he is a capable quarterback by his performances with the Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings.
With Dobbs, I believe the 49ers can survive for about six months before things truly get tough. Even if Purdy missed about eight games due to an injury, the 49ers would still be able to advance and challenge for the postseason. It gets more difficult to sell if Dobbs needs to go out there and win a playoff game for the 49ers.
If Dobbs starts a postseason game, the 49ers are finished because he is not going to win several games with the team. If Purdy is out for the season and Dobbs has to start for the 49ers indefinitely, then the team is particularly done. They are still capable of surviving and even competing.
But the 49ers can call the season over if Purdy (hopefully) sustains a season-ending injury. Of course, the 49ers will still scrape by and be a formidable opponent in the postseason, but they won’t accomplish much without Purdy.
