After two miserable seasons in charge, Kenny Payne was sacked by the University of Louisville as their head basketball coach eleven days ago.

Josh Heird, the athletic director at U of L, fired Payne on Wednesday following his 12-52 record over the course of two seasons. One of the nation’s more prominent collegiate basketball positions becomes available as a result of the transfer. The announcement follows Louisville’s elimination against NC State last Tuesday from the ACC Tournament.

Due to this switch, Louisville will have its fourth full-time head basketball coach in the previous eight seasons in 2024.

Heird stated in a news release, “Kenny has given a great deal to this university over a span of nearly 40 years, and he will always be a valued member of our Louisville family.” “I was the one who was most confident in Kenny’s ability to succeed when we welcomed him home in 2022, but it’s evident that something needs to change for this program to reach its goals. Making a coaching change is never easy, but this is the best choice for our program.

“I would like to thank Kenny on behalf of all of us associated with our men’s basketball team for his commitment to UofL. I want the best for him and his family going forward.

Payne finishes his head coaching career with a 5-37 record versus ACC opponents. In his first season in charge, the Cardinals finished 4-28; this season, they finished 8-24.

Potential Payne replacements are examined by Cardinal Authority.
