Cincinnati native Pat Kelsey, the head coach of the College of Charleston Cougars, has emerged as a candidate for the University of Louisville Cardinals’ vacancy, according to reports from Jeff Goodman and WDRB’s Eric Crawford, among others.

Kenny Payne was fired last week after two seasons at Louisville.

Many have mentioned former UofL assistant and Cincinnati Bearcats head coach Mick Cronin, currently UCLA’s head coach, as a candidate for the Louisville job.

Last week, Goodman reported that Kelsey and Chris Mack, who starred at St. Xavier High School before playing and coaching at Xavier, are on the short list to replace Jerry Stackhouse at Vanderbilt.

Kelsey, who played at Roger Bacon and Elder in high school, also played and coached at Xavier. For three seasons, he was an associate head coach at XU under Mack, the Cardinals’ head coach from 2018 to 2022.

Kelsey led College of Charleston to an NCAA tournament automatic bid for the second time in his three seasons as the Cougars’ head coach. Charleston, a No. 13 seed, faces No. 4 Alabama on Friday night in Spokane, Washington.

Baylor men’s basketball head coach Scott Drew will remain with the Bears despite being linked to the same position at Louisville, college basketball insider Jeff Goodman reported on Wednesday
