GREENVILLE, South Carolina: On Wednesday night, No. 3 Clemson defeated Presbyterian 11-1 at Fluor Field thanks in large part to three home runs from Blake Wright. The Blue Hose dropped to 9-12 while the Tigers, who won both games in the season series, increased to 19-2. The 10-run rule caused the game to conclude in the eighth inning.
Wright tied the school record by becoming the 17th player in Tiger history to hit three long balls in a game. He shares the school record with teammate Will Taylor, who on February 27, 2024, blasted three home runs against USC Upstate.The first run of the game was scored by Cooper Blauser lofting a sacrifice fly in the second inning, and Presbyterian tied the score in the top of the third inning on a two-out error.
The Tigers’ six home runs at Louisville on May 1, 2022, was the highest number of home runs Clemson has ever hit in a game.
Pitching in relief, Ethan Darden (3-0) earned the victory by pitching the third inning without giving up an earned run. Luke Gibson (0-1) of the Blue Hose took the loss.
Doug Kingsmore Stadium will host the Tigers for a three-game series against No. 7 Florida State, which kicks off on Friday at 8 p.m. on ACC Network.
Jimmy Obertop gave Clemson the lead in the bottom of the third inning with a 420-foot two-run home run, his fifth of the season; Wright followed with a solo home run; in the fourth, Wright crushed his second home run of the game, this time a three-run shot for his fourth multiple-homer game of his career; in the sixth and eighth innings, Mathes added a 425-foot solo home run; Wright, with six RBIs, finished the game with his second home run of the game.
