Mike Williams is traveling to New York from Los Angeles.

The New York Jets are set to offer the free-agent wide receiver a one-year contract worth up to $15 million, as verified to USA TODAY Sports by a person with knowledge of the agreement. The contract hasn’t been made public yet, so the speaker only agreed to remain anonymous.

The Chargers cut Williams last week in an effort to stay under the salary ceiling for Los Angeles.

Williams is a valuable free agent who the Jets signed. The 6-foot-4 wide receiver was among the best unsigned free agents left on the market. Alongside wide receiver Garrett Wilson, he gives quarterback Aaron Rodgers another threat on the outside.

In the previous season, Wilson had three touchdowns, 1,042 receiving yards, and 95 catches. No other wide receiver with more than 23 catches and 311 receiving yards was on the Jets roster.

Twice in his career, Williams has had more than 1,000 receiving yards; in 2021, he recorded a career-high 76 receptions and 1,146 receiving yards.

One of the best deep threats in the NFL has been Williams. Since being selected seventh overall in the 2017 NFL draft, he has amassed 309 catches, 4,806 receiving yards, and 31 touchdowns. He excels at bringing in contested catches and has a large catch radius.

Although Williams’ ACL injury ended his season in Week 3 of the previous campaign, the wide receiver should be back to full strength by the beginning of the regular season.

In an effort to strengthen their squad for the 2024 campaign, New York added Williams, guard John Simpson, defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw, cornerback Isaiah Oliver, defensive tackle Leki Fotu, tackle Tyron Smith, and tackle Morgan Moses this summer.
