The Seattle Seahawks have been comparatively quiet in free agency once more, with the exception of a few tiny agreements, but not for want of effort.

The Seahawks were among the clubs who expressed interest in standout edge rusher Bryce Huff, who signed a rich three-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason after leaving the New York Jets.

“The Jets, naturally. There was the Giants on the table. The commanders were seated. Seahawks and Vikings. According to Eagles Today on SI.com, Huff stated, “It was a good bit of teams.”

Huff, a Memphis native who will turn 26 next month, was initially signed as an undrafted free agent in 2020. He had grown into a reliable reserve for the Jets, but he posted a career-high 10 sacks this season.

Still, because he was a bit of a liability in run defence, he only appeared in 42% of the defensive snaps for the Jets. It may not have been the best idea to recruit another player who suffers with run defence, given that the Seahawks finished last season among the league’s worst.

It would also have been difficult to equal or surpass the three-year contract worth little over $17 million that the Eagles offered him. The Seahawks paid a premium to keep Leonard Williams earlier in the offseason, even though they still have some salary space. It was just not realistic to spend big money on another pass-rusher, and a much more specialised one at that.
