Along with veteran safety Jamal Adams, Diggs, 31, was cut by the Seattle Seahawks this summer as the team looked to be reorganising the defensive backfield around Pro Bowl safety Julian Love.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Seahawks strengthened their defensive backfield on Tuesday by supposedly signing veteran K’Von Wallace to a one-year contract. Additionally, Seattle added Rayshawn Jenkins, a safety, last week, and there is good depth at safety in this year’s draft.
Therefore, it seems like Diggs’ prospects of signing a lesser contract to return to Seattle are gone, however it’s unclear if his possible successors will be able to make the same impact that he did in recent years.
He played in every game over the previous four seasons and was a five-year starter for Seattle, earning three trips to the Pro Bowl. During his time with the Seahawks, he recorded 324 tackles (three for losses), one defensive touchdown, eighteen interceptions, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.
However, by releasing him, the team was able to clear $11 million in cap space, giving them more financial freedom to add free agents like Jenkins and linebacker Jerome Baker while re-signing defensive tackle Leonard Williams, tight end Noah Fant, and cornerback Artie Burns.
After being freed, he responded as follows:
On a short-term contract, Diggs should still have a market, and a few NFL players, both past and present, have already been aggressively courting him.
Diggs ought to eventually sign a contract with a franchise. But aside from erroneous reports, it doesn’t seem likely to be returning to Seattle.
